China's foreign ministry has accused the United States of circulating false information. Russia has denied requesting military assistance fro China.

The talks took place ahead of a meeting between top US and Chinese officials in Rome.

In a CNN interview, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated the US was "communicating directly, privately to Beijing that large-scale sanctions evasion attempts or support to Russia to backfill them would undoubtedly have consequences." (what happens if we go to war with russia)
"We will not allow that to happen, and we will not allow any government, anywhere in the globe, to provide a lifeline to Russia through economic sanctions," he added.
He went on to say that while the US felt China knew Russian President Vladimir Putin was "planning something" before the attack, Beijing "may not have recognized the full nature of it." (are we going to war with russia today)
Mr Sullivan stated, "Because it's quite probable that [Mr] Putin lied to them in the same manner that he lied to Europeans and others."
In response, Zhao Lijian, a spokeswoman for Beijing's foreign ministry, claimed the US has "been disseminating falsehoods against China on the Ukraine issue, with malevolent motives." (are we going to war with russia today)
When asked if China had received a request for military assistance from Russia, Mr Zhao dismissed the claim as "false news," but did not explicitly refute it. He went on to say that China's position has always been constant, and that the country is actively pushing dialogue.

Before the meeting began, Reuters reported that Mr Sullivan would lay out the risks and isolation that China would face if it extended its support for Russia.

China was one of 35 countries that abstained when the United Nations General Assembly voted to condemn Russia's incursion earlier this month.
